What are they?

Few incidents have greater impact on dental health and personal appearance than tooth loss.

When one or more teeth are missing we may recommend the placement of a bridge.

A conventional bridge is one or more replacement teeth anchored by one or more crowns on each side.

A bridge can often be the alternative to a denture to replace teeth and fill gaps and restore your smile.

What happens?

The preparation for having a bridge fitted is exactly the same as having a crown fitted.

Your dentist will shape the tooth so that, with the artificial crown, it will be the same size as a normal tooth.  The preparation time will depend on how damaged the tooth is and whether it needs to be built up with filling first.  The tooth might have to be root-filled first – this is sometimes called ‘removing the nerve’. The crown is sometimes held in place by a peg in the root canal if a lot of the tooth is missing.  Your dentist will use a soft, mouldable material to make ‘impressions’ of the teeth that are to be bridged and the nearby teeth.  Our dental laboratory then uses the impressions to make a bridge the exact height and size needed.

The benefits

A bridge is strong and can look and feel exactly like natural teeth.  The colour and shape can be matched to your own teeth.

Resin Bonded Bridges

Resin bonded or resin retained bridges (RBBs/RRBs) are minimally invasive fixed prostheses which rely on composite resin cements for retention.

Resin bonded bridges (also known as Maryland bridges) are another treatment option available for the replacement of a missing tooth. This treatment consists of a false tooth made from an aesthetic, white material, which locates into the space of the absent tooth, held in place by a metal wing connected to the back of either one or both of its neighbours, using a small amount of bonded filling material to attach the wings to the adjacent teeth.

Resin-bonded bridges are a viable option for long-term only in certain cases.
