What is it?

Periodontics is the treatment of the gums.  Healthy gums are vital for a healthy smile, which is proven by the fact that perio disease is a major cause of tooth loss in this country.  Our dentists are trained to treat gum disease and can help you to save teeth that are at risk of being lost due to this destructive disease.

What happens?

Gum disease begins with plaque, a soft, sticky substance that builds up on your teeth which is made up of bacteria and feeds on sugar from food and drink.  Tartar is formed by hardened plaque which in itself helps plaque to stick making it harder to remove yourself.  If plaque is allowed to build up, the bacteria in it can make your gums sore and infected; they will look red and puffy and they will probably bleed when you brush your teeth.  This is the first stage of gum disease – gingivitis.  The gum will then start to become detached from the tooth, forming ‘pockets’ in which more plaque can gather – and bone supporting the tooth will slowly be lost.  This is the second stage of gum disease – periodontitis.  Because this process is usually painless, it can become very bad without you noticing.  If left unchecked, gum disease will lead to loss of teeth.

The treatment

Treatment is primarily aimed at plaque removal and control.  This initially involves scaling and the deep cleansing of infected roots.  Helping you to understand and undertake stringent cleaning procedures at home will help the overall outcome of the treatment.  If you are suffering from advanced gum disease, periodontal treatment may be required.  Periodontal treatment involves numbing the gums and lifting the gum slightly in order to clean the deeper parts of the roots affected.  Modern techniques and equipment means that the treatment of gum disease is now more comfortable than ever before.

To avoid dental problems occurring we advise that you regularly visit to your dentist in addition to good preventative home care.  This is the key to maintaining good oral health and the beauty of your smile.

As a practice we are true believers that preventative care and education are the keys to optimal dental health.  We strive to provide dental health care vs. disease care.  That is why we focus on thorough examinations – checking the overall health of your teeth and gums.
